Secure music distribution system shown
A method to encode music, to permit secure sales, was shown yesterday in New York City at the Jazz 2001 music conference. Music-focused Web site developer N2K demonstrated the technology, developed with California-based Liquid Audio, and says it will be in use by the end of the year, according to a report by TechWeb. Called "E mod", its application is to permit downloading of music with a "digital watermark" embedded to dissuade pirates. (Digital
watermarks are inaudible frequencies encoded in music, permitting copyright identification and tracking.)
