I wear shoes most of the time. One never knows what lurks under the sand. I find the soft surface greatly reduces the pounding of joints usually aquainted with running. At 43, I can only take so much.

Rips along stretches of beach are cool as long as you know to flow with them and reassess where you want to exit the water. You will never beat rips. Rivermouths should be avoided for the most part. I can probably do a couple of miles in the open ocean but would not want to have to!
