How fast do you want your handset to ping-pong-empty the battery, that is, wake up and check if there is
a ping and when there is pong back.??

For CDMA add the time, processing and power it takes to keep running or set up rake receivers
plus setup power control if you want to respond to the ping.

For GPRS do not add anything, but do some study on the P-channel.

Try the same thing with your DSL modem, hook it up to a battery and turn off the power inbetween every packet.
