I was a very strong swimmer. The coach wanted me to join the high school varsity swim team. I didn't want to spend the time to do that - I was too much of a bum.

When I was about 20 I swam in the ocean (near La Jolla) for the last time ( I used to swim and body surf year round - brrr.) I was caught in an offshore gyre - a mega-rip that took me out probably close to a 1/3 mile. I swam across the rip but I kept going further and further out. When I finally made my way back to shore, I was pounded by an intense set of shorebreakers that beat me to a pulp. I was so close to being exhausted that it took everything I had to drag my sorry carcass up on the beach. I never swam in the ocean again.

I have an acquaintance who had a similarly frightening experience while surfing. He surfed everyday for 10 years and ended up being almost drowned. He came up to the shore and planted his board, saying "Anyone who wants it can have it."

This was one battle that no human is capable of winning - a head to head battle with the sea is no small matter.
