John, post this to you since you've been the most vocal in the AMD naming (Quanti-speed) thingy. OCworkbench took an email survey about the thing, and 7 got the meaning of it right out of 176! A few other interesting posts tagged along. - Tony
========================================================== Have you "GOTCHA" XP?! Posted by ngws at 15:51
After going thru. a total of 176 emails in response to my "XP XP XP" post, these are the "results":-
XP rating = Benched P4 clock speed (106) XP rating = Supposed NW clock speed (42) NW (NorthWood) Xp rating = Benched P4&NW clock spd(21) XP rating = Performance of a TBird (7) *Correct*
Only 7 of them got it right???!!! Yes. XP 1800+ refers to an Athlon 1.8Ghz. The rating system is mandatory then as the 1800+ is clocked at only 1.53GHz. One of the mail mentioned that "... the media is the one causing the confusion by speculating it against the P4..." Maybe. As it's clear to see who AMD is going after. Another mentioned it as "a myth and a misconception" that has to be stopped. To reinforce my point again. I was surfing yesterday, I came across this review and it states the reason for the XP rating as:-
"... a ****+ cpu .... it will perform as fast as a ***GHz processor from another manufacturer ..."
It was however amended today to reflect the correct facts and I salute him for that .... Many thanks to those who have responded too.
AMD Taiwan stop distributing AMD AthlonXP to retail stores Posted by overclocker at 13:35
Taipei, Taiwan - According to our Taiwanese correspondent, those who have bought the new Athlon XP are in luck as the Taiwanese distributor are asking retailers to return their unsold Athlon XP to the distributor and new stocks are not available to replenish the hot market. The distributor told the retailers that AMD is recalling the CPUs. Why is AMD stopping the distributor to distribute to the retailers remains a mystrey..
Techzone reviews ECS SiS315 Posted by overclocker at 10:41
The Tech Zone has posted a review of Elite Computer Systems' first video card! The ECS SiS315 256 bit AGP is a very inexpensive video card with TV-Out, 64megs of SDRAM, and seemingly a modern graphics GPU, courtesy of SiS. SiS won a "Best of Show" with the SiS315 GPU at Computex this year. They've turned some heads as of late in the mainboard chipset market. Let's see if they can do the same with video cards! Check it out here.

New Computer Worm Antrax Posted by overclocker at 10:35
Cnet.com says a new computer worm that attempts to ride on the coattails of the anthrax scare emerged Tuesday, but numerous errors on the part of the program's author seem to have scuttled any chance the worm has to spread.
Known technically as VBS.VBSWG.AF, and more colloquially as "Antrax," the worm was discovered in an email with a subject line that misspelled the name of the deadly anthrax disease as "Antrax" and that had a message body written in Spanish.
An English translation of the message provided by antivirus firm Symantec read: "If you don't know what antrax is or what the results of it are, please see the attached picture so that you can see the results that it has. Note: the picture might be too strong."
The worm is attached to the message as a Visual Basic Script, or VBS, file, and had been created with the VBS Worm Generator, the same point-and-click application that created the AnnaKournikova virus early this year.
However, this worm is not destined to be the same Internet epidemic that the Anna virus became. First, most anti-virus software can already detect worms created with the VBS Worm Generator program. Both Symantec's and NAI's antivirus software recognizes the Antrax worm as a creation of that toolkit. The backbreaker for this particular program: The script that emails out the worm to every entry in the Outlook address book has a flaw, preventing Antrax from spreading, said the Symantec advisory.

Our Athlon 1.33G is dead Posted by overclocker at 9:51
Looks like I am very unlucky ! My CPU is dead and I lost the receipt of the purchase which is doubled up as a warranty slip.
Since the Athlon CPU is dead, the AMD based reviews will be delayed (for those which I haven't benchmarked). Please be patient. I assure you that the reviews will be up once I get a new 1.33G Thunderbird. If you like to sponsor your CPU for our testing purposes, you are welcomed to do so :)

XP ..... XP ..... XP .......... Posted by ngws at 15:26
AMD introduced the new "Performance Rating" for AthlonXP as opposed the usual MHz / GHz this month. Nothing new but things will start to change when the P4 "NorthWood"(NW) is out on the market. So what then? Revised the XP rating or is the next-gen AMD Thoroughbred / Hammer supposed to take on the NW? The AthlonXP will be taking on 2 diff. class of P4 and if Thoroughbred is not launched by then, AMD will have to deal with massive market confusion as AthlonXP 1800+ may no longer hold true if compared to the P4 NW.
