As I said, this gets into some nasty and morally ambiguous math. What percentage of the time are you willing to goof? Since we don't have the weapons that get the bad guys, who has responsibility for the cost accounting, as it were?

Where are the reports? I'm not seeing them and I'm just left scratching my head about what appears to be a failed symbolic war against an enemy that moves before us like a will'o'the wisp.

Which of the criminals we identified in our intelligence summaries are dead and which are alive?
How many civilians did we kill by mistake in this broken land of dispossessed people, controlled by drug-running war lords?

We know that we had people die. We call it murder. That is probably an accurate description. But when the people who did the murder, the murderers, kill themselves, all we have left are accessories and those who contracted it. These organizations aren't pyramidal - they are distributed and really amount to a loose alliance.

The Taliban is only one of several organizations that control aspects of the territory we call Afghanistan. This isn't a country as we know it with a civil police force, city hall, public schools and a Congress. This is chaos incarnate. How the hell are you going to go into this cr@p-hole country and sort the wheat from the chaff? You ain't.

So, what are the criteria for success? This isn't rhetorical! Really, I'd like to know what winning this war looks like. Will it look like "an end to terrorism?" I don't think so.
