Can Hammer revive the tech sector?

John "Hannibal" Stokes of Ars Technica commented on the Hammer today. It's quite upbeat (http://arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/01q4/hammer/hammer.html). Here's his summation:

My gut reaction to the Hammer presentation can be summed up as follows: the success of modern computing has been in the mass-market commoditization of products and applications that were once restricted to the few who could afford them: high end 3D workstations are being replaced with PC's containing nVidia cards, supercomputers are being replaced with Beowulf clusters, custom software packages for serving data and applications have been replaced by open source, etc. By making high-end 64-bit computing both affordable and easily accessible to software developers, the Hammer appears to be situated squarely in this trend. Furthermore, the demand for affordable but powerful back end hardware and software will grow with the proliferation of the incredibly compelling mobile computing + application service provider model. So AMD has a huge potential market for the Hammer. It's going to be a fascinating five years...

In this context, could Hammer be the cornerstone for a new tech sector ramp?
