Cosmic - Al-Qaida is in Afghanistan only because Afghanistan gave them a home. They could hide out in the hills and fight a guerrilla war against the new government but that isn't their aim. They want to target the west, and specifically the US not some government of a small Asian Islamic country. They are mostly Arab not from Afghanistan. They don't have a base of support there without the Taliban. They could try to carve out their own small territory but administering it, fighting the government (or at least being prepared for possible attacks) and dodging US air strikes would distract them from achieving any of their real goals. If they are smart they will disperse and stay dispersed. This will allow many of them to survive but it will make them less efficient. Having a safe home base was a nice bonus for them. I don't think we will destroy Al-Qaida but we will deny them that safe home base.
