Hi all; EE-Times touts DDR SDRAM in report on NSM's Geode info processor:
National eyes info appliances with new Geode Will Wade, EE-Times, October 17, 2001 National Semiconductor Corp. is poised to bring out the first device based on its GeodeLink architecture. The chip is aimed at the Internet appliance market, which the company has been chasing for several years, although that market has yet to meet expectations. ... The chip will sample this quarter and will be available in volume in the first half of next year, at volume prices of less than $50 for both the main processor and a companion device. ... Besides the X86 core, the device includes a link to external double-data-rate DRAM, a floating-point unit, an on-die graphics controller and 32 kbytes of Level 1 cache. Gourvennec said the DDR DRAM controller is an important feature because memory systems often become system bottlenecks. Since the faster, DDR technology is coming into the market at the same time as the GX2, "the timing is perfect," he said. "The prices for DDR are becoming more similar to SDRAM prices now, and we may start to see more and more of that memory being used in Internet appliance designs." ... eet.com
