It is only the neanderthals like the current administration who lack the vision to get us off the petroleum teat,

Well, that's a bit harsh.. :0)

Personally, I'm all for decreasing our economic dependence on petroleum. However, the will to spend the money simply didn't exist when Bush was elected, so the second best solution was more drilling here at home.

Furthermore, certain technologies are still in R&D phases (like Fuel Cells), so it would be irresponsible to make such a shift in anything but a national emergency (now?).

I favor more ethanol, but even then it required energy to produce the crops necessary to produce alcohol, so I'm not quite sure whether their is sufficient cost-benefit in pursuing such a strategy. And it would inflationary with regard to other agricultural commodities as competition is created for arable land and grains.

The short-term solution is to increase US oil production, with the strategy of weaning this nation off of oil altogether over 10-20 years. Let the rest of the world continue to rely upon fossil fuels and deal with the Arabs and the 'Stans (where the latest large oil reserves have been found).

And I'm happy to see you agree with the use of Nuclear power.

Maybe we can get my thread dealing with Nuclear power active again:

Subject 50614

Personally, my favorite reference for making a case for Nuclear energy is James P. Hogan.
