Anyone suggesting quickie solutions to energy should spend a lifetime on the old Strictly drilling thread.
A whole bunch of knowledgeable folks have already discussed our addiction to energy from 1998 onwards. Douglas V. Fant, Sliderontheblack among others. From the 10 dollar a barrel days to the NG crunch days.
Yet people go on about silly petitions and such. No one wants to face problems like sprawl which make the whole country car dependent.
On Wind power, Denmark is a leader here with 10% of its energy coming from wind, including windmills placed slightly offshore to satisfy the 'aestheic concerns' crowd. The dept of energy web site has wind maps for every county with all the technical parameters of wind duration, speed etc.
My top three choices would be
1.Conservation
i. with emphasis on passive solar energy in home building, ie using right materials, architecture, trees etc)
ii. net metering (allowing every one to sell power back to utility)
iii. zoning to reduce sprawl
iv. Suv standards like cars
2 wind for the midwestern /mountain states.
3 fuel cells/ hybrid engines like toyota prius/ honda insight on the exploders and excretions
