>>One down ... 21 to go
Not to say we're keeping score, but Warren Sapp checked in Sunday with his first sack of the season, in Tampa Bay's fourth game. That leaves him a mere 21 behind Mark Gastineau. You may recall that Sapp opened training camp this season with an expressed goal of breaking Gastineau's single-season sack record, set in 1984. Boy, was it expressed.
"Mark Gastineau," said Sapp, when asked his goals for 2001. "I don't think a convicted felon should be the all-time [single-season] sack leader. I don't think a guy sitting at Rikers Island should have his name on top of the NFL record book, and I'm going to take it down. That's my philosophy."
Gastineau, a former member of the New York Jets Sack Exchange, has been in and out of legal trouble in recent times, and earlier this year did some more prison time for violating the terms of an anger management program stemming from an earlier domestic violence conviction. << |
