When the government is paying the bill, there is little or no pressure to compete on price and quality, nor to address the specific desires of consumers

The flaw is in the voting system. We have to view ourselves as share holders as well as providers for government in our nation. We need to have competition for profit as this can be a road to success as proven in the Casinos in Manitoba Canada. A well run owned by the government for the people business can be profitable. It amounts to government in competition with private industry and being able to be competitive in the retail market. Someone has to start defining government as business not the product of taxation. Tax exempt should translate to profit.
