San Francisco-based Providian said third-quarter profits fell to $57.2 million, or 20 cents per share, including a $23 million gain from early extinguishment of debt. This compared with $200.7 million, or 68 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Wall Street had expected the company to earn between 19 cents and 79 cents per share, with a mean of 31 cents per share, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call. On Oct. 11, Providian said it would earn between 19 cents and 21 cents per share in the quarter, down from earlier estimates of between 82 cents and 84 cents per share.
