Giffords was an old fashioned ice cream parlor. There was one near me in Bailey's Crossroads. I don't recall when it closed. Around 1980 maybe. There's still on in Bethesda. Next time you're in the neighborhood...

I just did a Google search and found this from the Post:

<<GIFFORD'S ICE CREAM COMPANY Folks have been ordering special-occasion cakes from this local institution for generations. It offers a choice of two flavors of ice cream, sauce in the middle (hot fudge, Swiss chocolate, strawberry, pineapple or butterscotch), cookies on the bottom and crumbs on the sides. We went for a small cake with fudge sauce in the middle. Superior ice cream, no heavy icing. Round custom party cakes require 48 hours' notice and are available in small, serving six to eight ($24); medium, serving 10 to 12 ($30); and large, serving 20 to 22 ($40). Gifford's Ice Cream Company (7720 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda; call 301-907-3436.)
