Someone told me that if you go back many years ago companies did not give guidance.

That was considered the job of the fund managers and other investors.

GLW torpeoded the optics sector by giving horriffic downgrades for the upcoming quarter. AMCC and PMCS did not give guidance but sounded sort of positive (we have maybe two more months to finish overhang).
