Anthems are meant to have insulting and jingoistic verses... that way people a generation on can get really embarrassed about them. Although it isn't clear who that verse refers to - it looks aimed, to me, at the 'loyalists' during the rebellion, rather than the British themselves... Here's a nice page, with all the awkward words: <g> friesian.com I'm sure I've read an earlier version of the British anthem with some fairly explicit anti-Jacobin lyrics (and by implication, anti-Scottish). Can't find any links to it, though.
