Mesa Air Group to Train Pilots to Carry and Use Non-Lethal Taser Weapons in Cockpit
PHOENIX (AP) -- Mesa Air Group Inc. will train its pilots to carry and use non-lethal Taser weapons in the cockpit in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration.

A Taser is a stun gun that fires a high voltage shock at a range of up to 15 feet. The attacker can be left dazed.

The Airline Pilots Association recently called for arming pilots.

Jonathan Ornstein, chairman and chief executive of Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group, said Thursday the move was necessary to help the airline industry recover in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the East Coast.

Ornstein said the company began placing trained security personnel on its Mesa Airlines operation out of his Albuquerque hub on Wednesday.

Mesa Air Group operates 116 aircraft with more than 830 daily departures to 153 cities and 38 states plus Canada and Mexico.

It operates America West Express, US Airways Express and Midwest Express.
