I think that morality is a matter of reason, not revelation, and therefore that using the same sort of data will yield the same result in all areas where belief in God has no particular bearing.
What a pleasant surprise! I am delighted! Of course, I agree with such a sensible position. I do not, however, think that reason alone is sufficient to maximize the good that one does. I believe that "feeling" or "sensitivity" is necessary to the equation. In other words, "empathy".
Nothing we do, in a moral context, need be detached from an individual's culture, preferences, needs, circumstances, and so forth--and reason, alone, cannot entirely take us to all the areas that are involved in whether a person is conforted or hurt by our behaviour. |
