Empathy is one of the qualities that it is desirable to promote, among others. Concern for the state of someone else's feelings, however, is only an approximation to moral concern, since sometimes we discomfit people for their own good, as when disciplining a child, and sometimes they deserve punishment, in order to uphold the moral order.
