Concern for the state of someone else's feelings, however, is only an approximation to moral concern

I was thinking of understanding their thoughts and feelings more as a pathway to what they "need"; and to what will cause them "benefit"--not as allowing (say) your child to override your authority because of her feelings...

I'm not a big fan of "authority" over children or anyone else. I am more into the coooperation required among people to reach mutual satisfaction of rights and goals. I am fond of relationships, but not so fond of anything too reminiscent of the master/slave "relationship".

Too many people (not only parents) place an overweening emphasis on control over others--rather than on respect for individual differences and preferences. I find that this often (and more often) correlates with people of an "absolutist" bent. However, that is another story.

I'm really leaving, now...
