John Kaiser, writing in an Oct. 17 Bottom-Fish Tracker, says Ashton's Oct. 16 announcement of what it refers to as a find of ultramafic rock with the characteristics of kimberlite at Otish Mountain in Quebec confirms a rumour that the letter writer mentioned in a Sept. 23 Tracker. Mr. Kaiser recommended Ashton in December, 1999, at 53 cents; he also made four earlier buy tips ranging from $1.15 in April, 1996, to 50 cents in October, 1999. Company officials are adamant that what they have found are not lamprophyres, of which there are plenty in the Superior craton. Mr. Kaiser attributes Ashton's conservatism to its newness to the region. A supportive Mr. Kaiser says that in spite of the market's ho-hum reaction to the news, hitting kimberlite on two out of four geophysical targets is a phenomenal exploration success rate. On the other hand, the market does not have any information that the chemistry of the new kimberlites corresponds to the G-10 portion of the regional composite chemistry. Mr. Kaiser says that the potential for great results should be seen as akin to a surprise Christmas bonus. He also says that BHP and Ashton are likely to mount aggressive drilling campaigns in 2002.
