Dear Albert:

AMD is at least being honest about one time charges. They err on the side of it being part of net earnings (GAAP). That way they have one every year or so. Others (who will remain nameless but we know who they are) always seem to have one time charges every quarter (sometimes many in a quarter). That smacks of abuse. This was pointed out by a commentator on CNBC last night. That too many companies have operating or Pro Forma earnings and the gap between then and net (GAAP) earnings has widened in the last few years. In 1999, the difference between Pro Forma earnings and GAAP earnings was 13%, now it averages 88%. He showed one (?Nortel?) that had Pro Forma earnings 400% above GAAP earnings. He states that the public is getting tired of these "so called operating" earnings because there is no standard definition.

I like AMD's approach in this, be very conservative in the use of these one time charges. It will pay off in the long run.

Pete
