One of the most fascinating distinctions I see on this thread is between those of us who bought years ago and are holding (mostly, chuckle) through the huge hit the overall market (and especially the techs) has taken in the last 18 months, and those who were unfortunate enough to buy into gorillas, and especially kings, just before or during this period of major downturn in stock prices across the board.

Exactly. It is much easier to handle. That brings up another thing that doesn't get mentioned here much - an investor's psychological (and practical) compatibility with an investing method. That comfort level is so important in making non-emotional decisions.

Yes, and some faith and luck. Relating back to your observation, it is no doubt easier to spend a few years beneath one's peak than that same time underwater. What is hard to do, but is very important to do for both groups - and this relates back to some of your other posts - is to evaluate going forward. Whether one paid $5 or $150 for QCOM, the only question today is whether one wishes to hold QCOM at ~$50 or not.
