ImmuCell Up 15%; Product May Help Fight On Anthrax: CEO

BOSTON (Dow Jones)--Shares of ImmuCell Corp. (ICCC, news, msgs) were up Friday after news reports that the one of the company's animal care products may have the potential to kill anthrax bacteria.
Shares of ImmuCell, which has a market capitalization of $14.4 million, recently rose 13.1%, or 57 cents, to $4.93 on volume of 326,300 compared with average daily volume of 8,500.

Shares reached a 52-week high of $5.20 Thursday; they have been as low as $1.50 on Dec. 27.
Michael Brigham, chief executive officer of the Portland, Maine, company said a local press report about the company's effort to bring the government's attention to the anthrax fighting potential of its "Wipe Out" cleansing products for dairy cows "definitely" appears to be the cause of the share price rise.
ImmuCell contacted U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, this week to bring to her attention the possible anthrax-fighting potential of Wipe Out, he said, so should could alert the proper government officials.
That prompted the media interest.
But he government has not contacted the company to follow up. "We hope to work with them, but there's nothing active or formal," Brigham said.
The active ingredient in the Wipe Out cloths is Nisin, which has been proven to be effective in killing a broad array of bacteria including Bacillus, a genus that also includes anthrax, Brigham said.
The company thinks it may be worth testing it for applications in fighting anthrax.
"There is a fair amount of literature that shows the effectiveness of Nisin in killing Bacillus," he said, and so if it indeed proves effective against anthrax, it might find a place in mail rooms as a hand wipe.
The company acquired the rights to Wipe Out in December, 1999, Brigham said, and it has been a popular seller to dairy farmers, who wipe cows' udders with the product before milking in order to cleanse them.
Brigham said his company isn't aware of any sales of Wipe Out that can be attributed to the reports of its anthrax-fighting potential.
The firm primarily develops of biotechnology products for the dairy industry.
No analysts cover the company, Brigham said.
Annual sales at the company is about $6 million, Brigham said.

Sen. Snowe's office in Portland, Maine, confirmed that she was contacted by ImmuCell about its animal care product's potential in killing anthrax. That information was passed along to the Department of Defense and to U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Davis Lackey, communications director for Snowe.
ImmuCell is following through with those contacts, he said.
