Anthrax scare at Yemen's Belgium mission
SANAA, Oct 19 (Reuters) - A letter containing white powder was sent to the Yemeni embassy in Belgium this week and is being tested for anthrax at a Brussels laboratory, a Yemeni security official said on Friday.
The official, who declined to be named, also said Yemen's central laboratory was conducting tests on another letter containing white powder that was sent from Canada to a Yemeni man living in the capital Sanaa.
"We have taken all necessary precautions and the tests are still being conducted," the official said.
The tests come amid a worldwide scare that the potentially deadly bacteria is being used as a biological weapon. Seven people have been diagnosed with anthrax in the United States, one of whom has died, and many others have been exposed to the bacteria.
There are fears anthrax is being spread in retaliation for U.S.-led raids against Osama bin Laden, suspected of masterminding September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, and the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, accused of harbouring him.
Yemen has pledged support for the American campaign.
Bin Laden is also suspected of having links to last year's bombing of the U.S. destroyer USS Cole at Yemen's Aden port.
