Fred...Are the Arab Muslims living within Israel better off than the Arab Muslims living in Palestine? I have no ideas about the matter because I have not been there and little has been written about the matter.

Right now I feel that Israel is playing a poor hand poorly. They are demanding that Arafat turn over to them the persons responsible for the killing of one of their ministers. From a political standpoint if Arafat were to return the suspected killers to Israel, he would be viewed as nothing more than a stooge for Israel. Then the question would be...who gets to kill Arafat first...the Palestineans or the Israelis. In this country if a suspected killer flees to Canada or Mexico then we begin extradition proceedings, but no such proceedure exists between Israel and Palestine.

One real difficulty that I see is that Israel views Arafat as being the head of the Palestinean state. But Arafat is not in charge of security for his own borders or of his interior. Its almost like having Canadien and Mexican tanks patrolling the DC area and then bitching about Bush not co-operating with the foreign invaders.

Some Israeli politicians are visiting with Bush in a few days in the hope that he declares Arafat a terrorist. Lots of luck. The Bush policy will be to squeeze two ways. One squeeze the Israeli's into a more co-operative stance with Arafat, and secondly to squeeze Arafat into making a better effort to control those extremists within his jurisdiction.

My observation is that American Muslims want no part of the radicalism of the Muslims in the ME. Could this be the difference between poverty (in the ME) and prosperity (in the US)? Could it be that prosperity retards the developement of Radical Muslims?

Regards, Jerome
