Tanzanian Muslims march in support of bin Laden
October 19, 2001 Posted: 4:42 PM EDT (2042 GMT)
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Muslims marched through downtown Dar es Salaam Friday in support of international terrorist suspect Osama bin Laden and against the U.S. military strikes on Afghanistan.
Waving bin Laden posters, chanting "Kill Bush!" and calling the United States the world's "No. 1 terrorist," the demonstrators were part of the first anti-American protest to be staged in this East African nation since the September 11 attacks. More than one-third of its 33 million citizens are Muslims.
"Muslims do not have problems with anyone," said Said Halfan, one of the demonstrators. "The United States "are the ones bringing problems to us."
They were demanding that the United States halt military strikes against Afghanistan, where Saudi dissident bin Laden is believed to be hiding. The United States began a daily bombardment of targets in Afghanistan on October 7 after the country's ruling Taliban refused to hand bin Laden over to the U.S. government.
Bin Laden is the prime suspect for masterminding the airborne attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon which killed some 5,000 people.
"We pray that America stop immediately bombing Afghanistan. If they don't stop, we are ready to go to fight with our Muslim brothers," said Mohamed Kombo, a businessman who joined the protest.
Observers estimated that as many as 50,000 people had made the 7-kilometer (4-mile) march in scorching heat through Dar es Salaam's dusty streets to Biafra Grounds, where public gatherings are often held.
Three years ago, a car bomb destroyed the U.S. Embassy here, killing 12 people, all of them Africans.
A U.S. federal court has charged Bin Laden with masterminding the near-simultaneous Aug. 7, 1998 attacks on the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where 207 Africans and 12 Americans were killed.
Tanzania is one of the 34 countries listed by the U.S. Congress's research branch as a place where bin Laden's cells are thought to operate.
The vast majority of Tanzania's Muslims are considered moderate, and the East African nation has rarely experienced problems with religious fundamentalism.
Police spokesman Laurean Tibasana said it was the first anti-American demonstration to take place in Tanzania since the terror attacks on the U.S.
"It ended peacefully, and that is what we wanted," he said.
President Benjamin Mkapa's government has condemned the terrorist attacks in the New York and Washington, describing them as "heinous crimes."

Don't you think that all these primitive Africans need is some big, deep-pocketed, Jew-run news agency to tell them the truth about what's going on worldwide?? That way these negroes will be as well-informed as their sophisticated American brethren, eh? So much so that only CIA know-it-alls will outpace them --LOL! |
