McCAIN TO BUILD MAJOR PROCESSING FACILITY IN UNITED KINGDOM


FLORENCEVILLE, N.B. — McCain Foods Limited has announced that it will build a major new French fry processing plant in the United Kingdom at an estimated cost of $150 million.
McCain President and CEO Howard Mann made the announcement at an open press conference held at the Eaton Lodge Hotel in Rugeley, West Midlands, England, Monday morning.
The state-of-the-art facility will be built just north of Rugeley which is about 25 miles northwest of the city of Birmingham. Mr. Mann said that land purchase, design work and application for permits will proceed immediately, following which construction will commence.
“I am delighted to announce that McCain has decided to build this new factory in the U.K.,” Mr. Mann said. “It is a testament to the high quality which exists in the British potato industry and the commitment of McCain to long-term, sustainable investment in the U.K.”
He said the plant will initially employ 150, and total employment may reach 450 with future expansion.
Joining Mr. Mann for the announcement were members of McCain Foods (GB) Ltd. management, including Managing Director Nick Vermont, Technical Director Ian Cameron and Finance Director Geoff Dent. McCain Foods (GB) presently has seven food plants in Britain, including four potato processing facilities.
McCain Foods Limited, the largest producer of French fries in the world, employs 18,000 and has more than 55 food processing plants in 13 countries on five continents.
