Carl... I think closing the borders was mainly due to the the pending APEC summit and Bejing's unwillingness to take ANY chance of some revenge attack against Bush on their soil.

Long term though, I can almost imagine Bejing filling in the power vacuum being left behind as the US gradually decreases its support for some of these regimes.

China needs energy badly for it economy to grow. I could see some form of quid pro quo forming leading to China becoming the patron of these unstable Arab states.

Very frightening, but extremely possible outcome of this war.

This will play out over a period of years, but the growing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians will continue to bring distance between the muslim world and the US.
