kt, it seems like just about all the beboppers skagged out. it always amazed me how long miles lasted. his autobio is great, btw.

funny you mention it, i saw monk at shelly's manhole in la, october '69. it was the strangest set i ever saw. everything was smokin right along until we began to notice that he was taking a little longer each time to come back in after solos. then, for about the last 10 minutes he just seemed to go completely to sleep. the rest of the band finished the set without him then packed up and left. for about 30 seconds none of us made a sound, just sat there watching him, zoned out on his piano bench. then somebody from the kitchen yelled out, "monk. godammit, wake up!" he sat up, and immediately commenced to play the coolest version of 'happy birthday to you' anyone is likely to hear. so, i guess the lesson i learned that night is this: when you need a nap, take it. and if the call comes in to do your duty you just do it. and that's how wrong gets right.
"brilliant corners"
"straight, no chaser"
"monks' dream"

regards,
larry
