This could get really ugly because once you start doing this to people who have never been found guilty of anything, where is the 'presumption of innocence'?

My first reaction was that one could reasonably give "truth serum" to material witnesses under special circumstances (along the lines of "hot pursuit") as long as it was understood that that information gained could not be used against the person in court.

Like I said, that was a first reaction. I'd be interested in hearing different ideas.
