Thank you for that thoughtful analysis, it corresponds well with my own, except:
Domestic attacks will be worrisome until it's clear we've made a successful science out of how to protect ourselves from a broad spectrum of attack. A big project, unlike anything we've undertaken, and should by rights involve every resident, civil defense, and infra-hardening. This will be a non-trivial economic element, in the fractional $trillions, but I'm not sure if it's net positive or negative, since it combines both massive contracting, and increased commerce friction.
The other worry is Fundies killing themselves and perverting their children until it's clear they've found another path. Perhaps that's even more difficult. It's not clear how that will evolve, when the light begins to dawn that civilization has been aroused and will suppress it.
As far as your lyrical representations of the USA as the "harbinger of civilization"... now, there's a challenge!
This will take every bit of decency and insight we can muster, to go along with military and economic success, once we can rely on our own safety.
A true Golden Age can emerge, I agree. |
