Yes, shoulders are allowed to be far apart. The best head and shoulders present these symptoms:

* it forms at highs or lows
* the left shoulder is stronger than the right
* the head is significantly higher than the left shoulder
* the volume dries up in the rise to the top of the head
* the head is a rounded top or a narrow wedge into the peak
* the volume is smaller on the right shoulder rise
* the H&S slants downward (right shoulder lower)
* the initial break of the neckline is forceful

The one presented last night scores fairly well using this list of criteria. Still, it's not as if I would trade only on this setup. It's a small factor I throw in the mix.
