Buenaventura, which expects to produce around 11 million ounces of silver this year and between 1.06 million and 1.1 million ounces of gold, has a 43.65-percent stake in Yanacocha, which is controlled by North America's biggest miner, Newmont Mining Corp (NYSE:NEM - news).

The Peruvian company also has the Julcani and Recuperada mines in Huancavelica in the central highlands, Uchucchacua in Lima and Orcopampa in the southern city of Arequipa, as well as having majority stakes in the Ishihuinca and Shila mines in Arequipa. Uchucchacua is Buenaventura's biggest silver producer and Orcopampa its biggest gold producer. Yanacocha expects to produce some 2 million ounces of gold this year compared with 1.8 million last year.

BRIGHT PROSPECTS

Galvez said that although Buenaventura's total silver output was expected to be largely flat, the gold production at some of its mines, such as Orcopampa, had increased.
