Fairchild Moves In On MEMS

by Bernard Levine, in Electronic News 10/15/2001

e-insite.net

According to Fairchild, it has licensed and successfully transferred the micromachining process, called the SUMMiT (Sandia ultra planar multilevel MEMS technology) IV. The technology is claimed to enable higher-performing products due to tight control over film stress and device topography.

Smart move. Growth opportunity. Getting in on the ground plane.

Fairchild will scale it up for volume manufacturing, while Sandia continues to advance the process. They are currently at SUMMiT V; the additional mechanical layer allows even more complex structures (e.g. movable platforms) plus greater robustness and achievable forces.
