OT -

Whooo. Just read your note. In particular, I disagree with your conclusion:

They arrested the leader's mothers and threatened to kill and torture them unless the terrorists cooperated. It worked. I don't want to know whether we do this, but, to me, our first responsibility is to protect our innocent and we can defend civil rights later.

The success of our society depends in large part on our ability to do BOTH, simultaneously. Franklin had it right - "Those who compromise liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Have courage and vigilance. Small personal anecdote: last week, a car was cruising our parking lot in a strange manner late one night. Where normally I would have ignored it, I instead challenged it. The answer I got - "just hiding from someone" - didn't inspire confidence, and we're near a TV station and some Texas Department of Health buildings. So I called the plates in to the non-emergency cop number and asked a cruiser to come check it out. I also stayed until the last employee was ready to leave and got to her car safely.

Big things? No. But those kind of extra little actions from a lot of people add up to our best defense against terror - and crime. None of what I did violated any civil rights, but I think it sent a message.

Prepare for the worst that can happen, but don't paralyze yourself by imagining it every second. Having a plan will actually help calm you. And DON'T let that fear drive you to doing or accepting things you'd regret in a few years.
