We support Israel, but that isn't exactly the same thing.

I know. I agree. Israel, for all its faults, stands way above any other government in the region. And would, I think, do the 'right' thing if it only felt secure.
Unfortunately, the powerful voices of too many in the Israeli lobby in the US don't - they see Sharon as the embattled hero, any and every action in reprisal justified [hmmm. assassination. rockets. removal of leaders. Do I see a parallel?]... and, worse, this is the voice that most Muslims in the ME hear, and too many in Israel shout for likewise...
