You mentioned TIAA-CREF. I once looked at their performance record and it was positively superb. Not equal to Warren Buffett but much better than the best mutual funds I had ever heard of. Since then, when I am thinking of buying a stock I try to find out if they have a large position in it. Of course they have owned our G&K favorites also, and taken their loss but some of the Kings which weren't so, are not on their list. To a certain degree one could have reduced loss by insisting in having them as partner investors.
