That's why we wait one generation to see how things are going. That is prudent, but I'm not going to call it a fully autonomous entity if we are pulling the strings. Okay, so Germany wasn't a puppet. Maybe. But, that is a country that is very close to us in terms of its culture. We have a huge number of German-ancestry people in this country and we had bases there (my uncle was a Colonel in the USAF Training command there). One of my many ethnicities is Prussian. So, it's not like we don't have some homophyly with these people.

For the bulk of people that have been in the U.S. for more than one generation, Islam is almost totally incomprehensible. We have no shared history or culture. I think we are a lot less likely to give that kind of latitude to Afghanistan.
