I'd still be a lot happier if I knew there were viable plans. Once the shooting starts- -actually, before that- -there are a great many things we are not told. Your choice basically is to ride this horse or go find another one. Your nation has chosen to throw its hand in with ours. I expected that, but I think we Americans still appreciate it. There's no law of nature that says Britain has to back us on anything, and yet mostly she still does.
Let's guarantee their safety inside the boundaries they were given. Arbitrary, maybe, but I think by now they'd be accepted. By whom? By bin Laden? Islamic Jihad? Hisbollah? And because of that, I think you're being overly optimistic.
And there isn't really another answer. But there is. It's bloody, but there is.
Think China or Russia will really demur, now? Quite possibly. Diplomats are nothing if not inventive. I'm sure they could justify not doing so if they felt it better suited their national interests.
Even the ME might have to agree. Some nations would. And some would tell you which orifice to push your treaty up. And having the agreement of the current national gov't could very well prove to be quite different from having the acquiescence of the people. I was in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia a few years back. I remember an Arab saying that this was a war between peoples, not governments- -that the governments could make whatever peace agreements they wished; they would mean nothing because his people would not make peace.
I've reluctantly accepted that nuking the baby-bombing murderers and sterilising the entire island so that it never bears any more of their verminous breed to pollute this planet is - possibly - an over-reaction. We could, sure. But I think it wouldn't really be worthy of us, we're better than that. Glad to hear that. Because I'm of Irish ancestry. I've never supported the IRA and never will. I consider the extremists on both sides to be idiots.
You tell me. If GWB had his uncle, a couple of friends and his bodyguard (not to mention sundry policemen) blown up by the Taliban, would you feel it right to detonate a few megatons over Kabul? Why stop at a few? Those nuts should consider themselves lucky I'm not President because they would be pretty glowing particles in the stratosphere.
Would you *really* want to see Ireland as a glowing crater? 1. The Government of Ireland is not the IRA. It also appears to me the Irish Republic neither shelters nor aids the IRA. 2. Which IRA attack killed 6,000 Brits? |
