Are you suggesting that Sen Daschel or 534 members of Congress represent the citizens of D.C.?
First, I think your question trends the discussion "OT", but in direct response: Actually, since the District is not a state but is just that -- a district -- without its own Congressional voting representatives, Congress (535 in all, including Daschle) does represent D.C., although D.C. citizens have been disputing that for years. There's a D.C. Committee in Congress made up of Congresspeople from the 535, and there's a City Council and a Mayor. Now with the representation issue coming to a head, D.C.'s new auto license plates read, "TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION." Lest anybody think otherwise, I'm against giving D.C. voting Congressional representation, for sound reasons that have survived 200+ years, so far.
However, back ON topic, that is not the point I was making at all. The point is that Congress gets its mail from that postal sorting facility and has its own selfish political interests at heart when considering the ramifications of whether constituents' mail gets to them so it can be responded to, generating re-election votes, among other concerns. Brentwood is part of Congress's communications link, and it has been hit by terrorists, whether directly or incidentally. |
