You are absolutely right about the puffs of air, and the rollers, and the compressed air. As for the OCR machines, my impression based on the operation at Merrifield is that they don't really work all that well, and handwritten mail is hand sorted, but maybe other places have it together.

OCR operators are craft grade/level 5, which pays better than manual sorters, which are 4. The big letter sorting machines (LSM) are craft grade 6, which pays the best. So that's one reason they sort things manually. And those people in Alabama (here it's West Virginia) get paid minimum wage or a little better, they aren't in the Union. How they can read the envelopes where they are is a mystery to me, but it works.

Today when I got a thick stack of mail out of my mailbox I was very conscious of the fact that I could feel fine grit - probably have felt it all my life and never noticed it. Eeeeek!

Luckily for me, I am already a neurotic hypochondriac, so I can handle paranoia just fine.-g-
