In Singapore, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd, the third-largest maker of chips to companies' design, rose 4.2 percent to $3.50, halting a three-day, 8.2 percent decline. The stock gained after the company reported a smaller-than-expected third-quarter loss of $118.3 million.
``From the numbers, it's better than expected,'' said Gregory Yap, head of research at OCBC Investment Research Pte. ``They are making more progress on their cost savings and that should allay some concerns that the company may not be viable from a liquidity standpoint.'' |
