"If nonstop anthrax news can't bring the market down, what can?"

Tax-loss selling.

People need gains to offset the losses.

Many don't have long term, built in gains.

Some of us do and I have considered selling a few shares of LRCX and AMAT where I have huge gains and then take some losses in some recent buys that are lower and then buy a smilar company like NVLS so I stay in the semicapx sector. I wonder how much of this really goes on?

Mutual funds... that is another issue as they might carry over the losses so they can churn the next year and not report as many gains.

anyway, we might be surprised at the lack of tax loss selling this year since many might be holding cash waiting for a great buy on Dec 29th or so.... and never get their price.
