Alliance to develop Silicon Biotechnology. Let's rock!

siliconinvestor.com

Q: What is the impact of ''silicon biotechnology'' on nano-technology?

A: A number of marine organisms have demonstrated an ability to build protein lattices for deposition of silica and other inorganic material. It might be possible to engineer these proteins for the bioproduction of silicon chips and other nano-structures. Other microorganisms have capabilities to generate energy, respond to light, switch on and off, and move towards some molecules and away from others. It is possible to understand the molecular biology of these attributes and harness them for use in nano-scale devices built on natural system analogues.

Hopefully it's not just science fiction.
