| Black- white romances seem to me to be the leading indicator, since there is still the greatest resistance to crossing the color bar there. Although intermarriage has grown much more slowly there, it has grown. From my personal observation, it looks to me like black- white dating, even if it does not lead to marriage, has become commonplace. I know that such couples rarely raise a visible eyebrow. In fact, my brother's experience has been that they have only been treated with a bit of hostility by a waitress once, in Boston of all places, and they travel a lot. I know that when we had his family join us at a beach cottage in New Jersey a couple of years ago, everyone was perfectly nice, and no one tried to prevent her children from playing with our nephew. So, overall, I think the melting pot is working pretty well, and that most everyone, in the end, wants to move to the suburbs and be accepted....... |
