Alan, with respect, I think you have missed the point in the article.

Committing (quasi-)terrorist acts on innocent people in the name of finding or killing bin Laden is as much unjustified as killing people in the WTC because one disapproves of the US policy towards Israel/Palestinians or Saudi Arabia.

The idea that bystanders and innocents can or should be killed while the US pursues its retribution on whoever is completely unacceptable to many people even though the US administration likes to use the euphemistic term "collateral damage", as if that makes it OK. In actual fact, killing innocents only aggravates the already awful situation and increases the resolve of the "terrorists".

What makes this present "war" different from others is that it's a form of civil war. The enemy is within each and every country of the world. For example, who would have thought that a few envelopes containing anthrax bacteria would have had such a devastating effect on the US postal service? One shudders to think what damage a hundred such envelopes would cause. Globally!

Frankly, I don't know what the answer is. I only hope that the world situation doesn't become like the Israeli/Palestinian one which, now, can never be settled unless, of course, one side completely eliminates the other. There is no longer a voice of moderation or reason --- each side claims justification in pursuing its relentless destruction of the other. The real tragedy is that Israel, and now the world, is being dragged into war because of the greed, stubborness and religious fanaticism of a few right-wing settlers who have built their homes in Palestinian land.
