heehee, regarding smallpox

My better half is Cherokee. As you may know, it is accepted as historical fact that the US Government intentionally used smallpox as a bioweapon against native Americans. A quote from the following link: "In the 19th century, American Indians were infected with smallpox through donated blankets." Whole tribes were wiped out. Very effective.

My better half's mother often told the following story. When she was a child (early 20th century) her entire family came down with smallpox except her father. Somehow, mercifully, he remained healthy and was able to nurse his quarantined family (ALL of them) back to health. Given the size of their family, it is a statistical improbability that all would survive (given the mortality rate of small pox which is 40%). I can think of two possible reasons for this: one is some kind of genetic protection, the other is the one my better half subscribes to. She says that her grandfather had knowledge of Cherokee herbal medicines that cured his family. That knowledge has not survived. (Note to all you youngsters out there: Pay attention and learn from your elders. You never know when that knowledge could come in handy.)

A sociological question: Would today's typical American family observe self-policed quarantines ?
