People who give "no thought" to their actions can be heroes, or they can wind up dead. The heroes are the ones you hear about in warm and fuzzy news stories- and this is probably good. But you can find just as many stories of people who acted "instinctively" and died, if anyone survives to mention their story, of course. The people who ran to the roofs, for example, because that is where rescue helicopters would come. No doubt many of those people heroically helped other people to the roofs- but since the building collapsed, it was a poor choice, in retrospect.
